Specialists in back-deck equipment design and manufacture, Motive Offshore’s Engineering division demonstrated its fast-track capabilities responding to an urgent design and build request for a 38Te SWL hydraulic drum winch package including two 480kW safe area electric hydraulic power units (HPUs), for an offshore renewable energy project.

A typical timeline for this type of project is 14-16 weeks. Motive expedited and completed the work in just eight weeks, backed by the positive “can and will-do” mindset of the Engineering team, combined with effective project management.

Early Engagement = Client Wins Bid

Discussions began whilst the client was preparing a bid to provide cable pulling services for an offshore renewables project in Singapore.

Having experience of Motive’s expertise in both the required products and the renewable energy sector, the client understood that early engagement with Motive would have a significant positive impact on the bid success.

Motive supplied industry-leading technical advice enabling the client to fine-tune their bid, including various amendments which provided an optimised technical and commercial solution. This resulted in significant cost savings, for both the client and the end user.

As the successful bidder, the client’s project became subject to several delays totaling six months, culminating in Motive receiving very short notice to complete the final design and manufacturing phases.

Utilising existing client equipment, with minor modifications and the addition of a low-cost hydraulic control system, Motive devised an innovative solution that significantly reduced the overall cost of the project.

Motive Engineering, based in Boyndie, Aberdeenshire, operates a 3,500sqm facility where major projects can be completed under one roof. The manufacturing, fabrication, machining, welding, assembly, commissioning and testing of the winch, hydraulic power units and control system took place in-house, ensuring maximum efficiency and effective control of the project.

Results

By engaging with Motive Offshore at the very earliest opportunity, the client was able to draw upon Motive’s expertise and experience to create a winning bid. Following this, the inherent agility – the result of a company-wide ethos and lean structure – meant that manufacture, fabrication, and testing of the equipment spread was achieved within eight weeks; a significant reduction in the time normally required for this type of project.
